Kalabhairav Jayanti, an auspicious Hindu festival, commemorates the birth anniversary of Lord Kalabhairav, a formidable manifestation of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Margashirsha as per the Hindu calendar, this day is also known as Kalabhairav Ashtami.
Lord Kalabhairav holds a significant place as the guardian deity of Varanasi (Kashi). Devotees believe him to be the "Kotwal" or chief police officer of Kashi, ensuring the safety and security of the holy city. Often depicted with a dog as his vehicle, Kalabhairav is associated with annihilating ignorance and protecting devotees.
Worshipped as the supreme ruler of time and the destroyer of all evils, Lord Bhairava's name signifies the terrifying aspect of Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that seeking Lord Bhairava's blessings can instill courage, provide protection, and liberate from the cycle of birth and death.
Kalabhairav Jayanti is marked by various rituals and ceremonies. Devotees begin the day with an early wake-up, followed by a holy bath and prayers offered to Lord Bhairava. Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva conduct special pujas and yagnas, with priests chanting Vedic mantras. Many observers fast on this day, breaking it only after performing the evening aarti.
A renowned place of worship associated with Kalabhairav Jayanti is the temple of Kilkari Bhairav Baba, situated behind the Old Fort near Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The temple houses the idol of Lord Bhaironath, believed to be installed by Bhimsen, one of the Pandavas. The idol consists only of the head with blue eyes and a trident in hand.
According to folklore, the Bhaironath Temple in Delhi traces its origins back to the Mahabharata era, constructed by the Pandavas. Legend has it that during the time when Goddess Vaishno sought refuge in a cave, Bhaironath attempted to break the entrance. In response, the Devi transformed into Goddess Chandi, slaying Bhaironath. Despite severing his head, Bhaironath sought mercy, and Goddess Chandi granted him liberation. Since then, Bhaironath has been worshipped at various places, including the Bhaironath Temple in Delhi.
